Visual Journalist

You’ll be a key member of our South Island newsroom, based in Christchurch, working alongside some of the best journalists in the country.

The opportunity:

As a Visual Journalist at The New Zealand Herald, you’ll be at the forefront of storytelling — capturing powerful stills and compelling video that inform, engage and inspire audiences across all NZME platforms.

You’ll be a key member of our South Island newsroom, based in Christchurch, working alongside some of the best journalists in the country to deliver visual journalism that beats the competition. From fast-moving breaking news to sport, politics, local issues, and in-depth features, no two days will look the same.

Key accountabilities:

  • Capture high-quality photography and video for digital and print platforms

  • Deliver creative, engaging visual storytelling that brings news to life

  • Cover a wide range of assignments, including breaking news, sport and features

  • Operate and maintain camera, sound, lighting and video editing equipment

  • Work collaboratively with reporters and editors under tight deadlines

About you:

  • A strong eye for news, storytelling and visual composition

  • Proven experience in photography and video production

  • Confident using cameras, audio, lighting and editing systems

  • Comfortable covering everything from live breaking news to long-form features

  • Full New Zealand driver’s licence

  • A genuine passion for visual journalism and news gathering
