THE OPPORTUNITY
This is a rare fixed-term opportunity to sit at the very heart of New Zealand’s leading newsroom. As a Homepage Editor, you’ll play a pivotal role in showcasing the best of the NZ Herald’s journalism, driving engagement, growing audiences and supporting subscription growth.
Working as part of the homepage team, you’ll help deliver on NZME’s ambition to be New Zealand’s number one news brand for all New Zealanders. You’ll collaborate closely with newsroom leaders, reporters, producers and audience engagement specialists to programme, package and optimise content across multiple digital platforms.
From breaking news and live blogs to premium storytelling and syndicated content, you’ll ensure the homepage is dynamic, trusted, balanced and compelling at all times.
HOW YOU’LL DO IT
You’ll combine sharp editorial judgement with strong digital production skills to ensure our journalism reaches audiences in the most effective way.
Your work will include:
Running and curating the homepage, ensuring a smart, engaging and strategic content mix
Editing, rewriting and producing stories quickly and accurately, maintaining the highest editorial standards
Writing compelling headlines, intros, captions and blurbs tailored to platform and audience
Using audience tools such as SmartOcto and A/B testing to drive engagement and subscriptions
Publishing content efficiently through the CMS, applying SEO headlines, metadata and tagging
Enhancing stories with images, video, graphics, polls, related content and data visualisations
Producing live blogs and supporting news desks as required
Selecting and publishing syndicated content and working with outsource partners
Managing and contributing to NZ Herald’s social media presence when needed
Creating AM and PM quizzes and puzzles using AI tools, and working with product teams to evolve these offerings
Moderating comments to encourage robust, respectful debate and support the development of AI moderation tools
ABOUT YOU
You’ll thrive in a fast‑paced newsroom environment and bring strong editorial instincts, digital confidence and a collaborative mindset.
You’ll bring:
A relevant journalism qualification and experience working to daily deadlines
Excellent editing, writing and rewriting skills, with outstanding attention to detail
Confidence using digital publishing tools, analytics and emerging technologies
Sound judgement and a strong understanding of media law, ethics and newsroom compliance
The ability to juggle multiple tasks calmly under pressure
A proactive, organised and solutions‑focused approach to your work
Strong communication skills and the confidence to coach and collaborate with colleagues
A genuine appetite for learning, development and adapting to change
