Journalist - BusinessDesk
Break and analyse NZ corporate news with BusinessDesk- spot trends, build networks, and craft compelling stories across digital platforms.
What you will do:
You will work with the BusinessDesk team to break, develop and report corporate news among publicly listed and privately held companies, particularly NZX-listed companies, NZ companies listed on the ASX and NZ companies raising capital and trading shares on the USX and through crowd-funding platforms.
You will also develop knowledge around company liquidations, economic data and an understanding of what makes NZ businesses tick.
How you will do it:
The core of this role involves either the existing ability or the ability to quickly learn to read and become confident with basic financial analysis of companies’ earnings reports, strategic updates, and major announcements.
This is the bedrock for forming relationships with investors, financial analysts, company spokespeople, executives and board members, with a view to breaking original news and providing sophisticated analysis of corporate activity.
Your focus is on companies showing promise to become fast-growing, that already have scale and are significant to NZ’s economic performance, or that are experiencing difficulties or lax disclosure. You will work to deadlines and produce news photographs.
Planning and organisational skills:
- Ability to take guidance and instruction/have stories assigned to you
- Ability to work well independently, while also feeling confident to seek assistance from mentors and senior newsroom staff
Technical skills:
- Financially literate – able to read and interpret a basic company profit and loss statement, balance sheet, auditor’s report and notes to the accounts. Able to identify when an announcement or development is significant and newsworthy.
- An ability and skillset to combine words, images, video and graphics in any combination to create extraordinary, compelling stories for digital audiences of NZME.
Specific skills under the direction of the BusinessDesk news editors and other members of the senior editorial team:
- Break and develop great business stories — and plan delivery accordingly for multiple channels, with engaging innovative storytelling techniques (including data, video, audio and interactive techniques).
- Develop ideas for stories that can be told through multimedia — content that surprises, delights and informs NZME audiences.
- Learn and adapt the most innovative storytelling techniques to build new, highly engaged audiences across multiple channels and platforms.
- Think laterally and cleverly about the best ways to present stories across different platforms, including mobile, tablet, video, desktop, print and radio.
- Pitch ideas to the editorial leadership team. Keep a forward list of approved projects. Contribute to the regular planning meetings Contribute to the development of ideas across all departments.
- Develop a strong network of contacts and sources of tips, especially in assigned specialist topic rounds and areas.
- Adapt an audience-first mentality, using analytics and other tools to better understand audience and BusinessDesk’s audience segmentations.
- Produce high-quality backgrounders and feature pieces as appropriate.
