Senior Reporter - BusinessDesk
Shape NZ’s future - join BusinessDesk as a senior reporter covering infrastructure, transport & housing. Break stories, analyse policy, and drive impact.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
BusinessDesk has an opportunity for a senior reporter to make their mark in the fast paced, dynamic infrastructure sector.
- You will work with the BusinessDesk team to break news amongst a range of listed and private companies, and organisations - with a particular focus on infrastructure, transport and housing.
- The core of this role involves the ability to understand what is going in New Zealand’s infrastructure community. You will be able to quickly learn and become confident with the operations of major infrastructure providers, government departments and funders.
- This is the bedrock for forming relationships across the business and political community with a view to breaking original news stories and providing sophisticated infrastructure analysis.
- The ability to explain policy changes, digest financial reports and use data to uncover stories is a must.
- You will highlight infrastructure firms showing promise to become fast-growing, that already have scale and are significant to NZ’s economic performance, or that are experiencing difficulties or lax disclosure.
- You will also scrutinize the relationship between government and the private sector, such as the use of consultants and have a strong understanding of procurement and costing.
- The successful candidate will enjoy actively engaging in field reporting, visiting project sites, attending community and industry events, and opportunities for travel.
ABOUT YOU:
- At least 5+ years working journalism experience or relevant qualifications in urban planning, engineering or public policy.
- Ability to break and develop public policy and business stories
- Strong command of the Official Information Act, and proven track record reporting central and local government
- Demonstrated ability to develop a strong network of contacts and sources of tips, especially in assigned specialist topic round and areas
- Knowledge and experience of NZ media law
- Ability to work out of Auckland and Wellington offices preferred but not essential.
WHAT’S ON OFFER:
- Be part of New Zealand’s leading business news outlet, with a reputation for high-quality, investigative journalism.
- Contribute to shaping public discourse on critical infrastructure issues impacting New Zealand’s economy and society.
- We offer an organisation with a culture second to none; we’re all about diversity & inclusion, reward & recognition and growth & development in our people.
- This a full-time position.
All applicants will be asked about their current working rights in New Zealand. Eg. Citizen, resident, visa, no visa etc.
