Evening News Director (Fixed Term)

THE OPPORTUNITY:
As a News Director you would work alongside editors to assist with making decisions and delegating assignments and responsibilities across the reporting team.
A key part of the news director role is to help editors facilitate and roll out breaking news coverage. You’ll have the ability to drive daily news content from start to finish, based on audience wants and needs. You’ll need sound news judgement, the ability to think laterally and creatively, and to easily identify what our audience sees as valuable. You will be a people leader.
You will take responsibility for allocating adequate resource, ensuring that assignments and briefs are clear, and communication is effective.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Journalism and content generation, showing exceptional news judgement in determining news direction in conjunction with the content chief.
- Managing, coaching and motivating a team, displaying strong leadership skills.
- Cover News Directing shifts on the NZ Herald Newsdesk, managing breaking news, deploying resources effectively.
- Allocate news assignments and briefs, ensuring they’re communicated effectively.
- Maintain a strong network of contacts and story sources, together with good local knowledge and a wide awareness of news and current affairs.
- Ensure premium content is well-executed.
ABOUT YOU:
- Relevant qualification and/or significant experience in a senior newsroom role
- Skilled at covering stories on a wide variety of topics.
- Comfortable in print, digital and broadcasting environments.
- Proven track record of effective and positive people-leadership abilities.
- Foster a high-performing culture and respect others’ views, contributing positively to NZME as a whole.
