Ryan Bridge TODAY Producer/Reporter
Help shape Ryan Bridge TODAY with sharp video journalism for NZ Herald audiences.
THE OPPORTUNITY
NZME is looking for an inquisitive energetic and audience-focused Producer/Reporter to join Ryan Bridge TODAY, the NZ Herald's innovative weekday morning video news show delivering quality, up-to-the-minute journalism to audiences across digital and streaming platforms - and soon to be broadcast on television on Three.
This is a hands-on role in the heart of a fast-moving newsroom environment. You’ll help keep Ryan Bridge TODAY fresh, relevant and compelling, moving seamlessly between producing interviews, pitching story angles, briefing presenters and reporting live or pre-recorded content when news breaks.
Working under the guidance of the Executive Producer of Ryan Bridge TODAY, you’ll be across the daily news agenda, identifying what matters most to our audiences and shaping it into engaging video content. From breaking local and international news to politics, business, sport, lifestyle and entertainment, you’ll bring strong news judgement, curiosity and creativity to every part of the show.
You’ll also help grow the reach and impact of Ryan Bridge TODAY by thinking beyond the livestream — identifying fresh angles from interviews, supporting multiplatform storytelling and helping deliver content that works across video, written articles, social platforms and still imagery.
HOW YOU’LL DO IT
You’ll bring a strong nose for news and a clear understanding of what resonates with NZ Herald audiences. Each day, you’ll scan the news agenda, pitch interview ideas, chase talent, identify new angles and help build a compelling rundown that keeps pace with breaking developments.
You’ll research interview topics and talent thoroughly, cross-checking information to ensure everything we publish and broadcast is accurate, fair and aligned with NZME’s editorial standards. You’ll prepare concise briefing notes, suggest clever interview questions and ensure presenters, producers, interviewees and wider teams are clear on the plan for the segments you produce.
You’ll be confident working across live and pre-recorded video environments. At times, you may be reporting live from an unfolding situation, presenting on camera, or helping produce visually engaging interviews by working with editors on b-roll, graphics and other production elements.
You’ll think creatively about how stories are best told in video form, using strong production instincts to make content visually engaging and easy for audiences to follow.
You’ll be able to clearly identify new angles uncovered in interviews and quickly help develop follow-up interviews and stories, written pieces, video assets and supporting visuals, as required.
You’ll work quickly and efficiently, managing competing priorities and shifting deadlines in a dynamic newsroom. You’ll be comfortable working independently when needed, while also collaborating closely with presenters, producers, journalists, multimedia journalists, visual journalists, studio operators and video producers.
You’ll operate with an NZME-wide mindset, building strong relationships across our publishing and wider NZME teams. You’ll follow prescribed editorial styles and formatting guidelines, maintain excellent spelling and grammar, and uphold NZME’s newsroom mission, Editorial Code of Ethics, media law obligations, Health & Safety and wellness requirements.
ABOUT YOU
You’ll be a passionate newsroom operator with a desire to grow and develop your skills and experience.
You'll have a relevant qualification and/or strong experience in reporting, production or multimedia journalism. You’ll be comfortable in digital and broadcast environments, with an understanding of video news production requirements and what it takes to deliver high-quality content under pressure.
You’ll have sound news judgement, a strong contact book and the initiative to line up interviews, chase information and find the angle without waiting to be asked. You’ll be curious, resourceful and confident dealing with a wide range of subjects, from hard news and politics to business, sport, international affairs, lifestyle and entertainment.
You’ll be a clear and confident communicator who can brief presenters, producers and interview talent in a concise and professional way.
You’ll be able to distil complex issues into simple, useful notes and questions, helping the team deliver interviews that are informed, engaging and audience-focused.
You’ll have strong attention to detail, excellent spelling and grammar, and a commitment to factual accuracy. You’ll understand the importance of media law, editorial judgement and ethical decision-making in a fast-paced newsroom.
You’ll also be calm under pressure, adaptable when plans change and comfortable working flexibly around shift timings due to the nature of news. You’ll welcome feedback, respect different views and contribute positively to a collaborative team culture.
Most importantly, you’ll be hungry to help build new audiences through innovative storytelling, fresh ideas and quality journalism that keeps New Zealanders informed wherever and however they choose to watch.
