THE OPPORTUNITY
This is a rare and high-profile opportunity to lead Newstalk ZB’s political journalism from the heart of Parliament. As Political Editor, you will set the political agenda for one of New Zealand’s most influential talk brands, guiding coverage that informs, challenges and engages audiences nationwide.
Based in the Parliamentary Gallery in Wellington, you will lead a talented team of political journalists and commentators, ensuring Newstalk ZB consistently breaks stories, delivers authoritative analysis and covers political issues ahead of competitors.
As a radio specialist and senior newsroom leader, you will be a trusted and recognisable voice on air — providing live crosses, interviews, analysis and commentary across Newstalk ZB and NZME’s digital platforms.
HOW YOU’LL DO IT
You’ll combine editorial leadership with sharp political instincts and outstanding broadcast skills to deliver agenda-setting journalism.
You will:
Lead and manage the Newstalk ZB Parliamentary Gallery office and team operations
Set editorial direction and coverage priorities for political news and events
Break hard political news and develop exclusive stories and investigations
Deliver frequent live-to-air crosses, interviews and analysis
Provide strong leadership through coaching, mentoring and development
Plan and execute coverage of major political events, debates and announcements
Ensure content is accurate, legally sound and audience-focused
Oversee diaries, rostering, workflows, budgets and administration
Drive high-quality output across radio, digital, video and social platforms
Represent NZME with credibility and authority within the political sector
ABOUT YOU
You’re an experienced political journalist and proven leader with a strong reputation for accuracy, insight and authority.
You’ll bring:
Significant leadership experience in a major media organisation
A respected profile in political journalism and commentary
Exceptional news judgement and audience-first thinking
Strong live broadcasting and interviewing skills
Deep understanding of New Zealand politics and parliamentary processes
Ability to work calmly under pressure and to tight deadlines
Sound knowledge of media law and broadcasting standards
Journalism qualification and at least five years’ experience (preferred)
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally when required
You’re confident, curious and connected — someone who challenges the status quo, builds strong networks and leads with clarity and credibility.
