Are you an outstanding reporter looking for a new challenge in public interest journalism?

The Northern Advocate, with the support of RNZ, the Newspaper Publishers’ Association and NZ On Air, is hiring an experienced journalist on a fixed-term basis to take part in the Local Democracy Reporting (LDR) service.

This pilot project, which is modelled on a successful BBC-funded scheme in the UK, will place eight reporters in regional newsrooms around New Zealand. You will exclusively cover local authorities and other publicly-funded organisations. You will report to your newsroom’s editor but will receive extra training and support from the scheme’s partners, and your work will be made available simultaneously to RNZ and other qualifying media partners, including competitors.

You will be expected to file daily news copy, as well as images, audio and video as required. Multi-media training will be provided.

You’ll be comfortable coming up with your own ideas and working under minimal supervision.

We’re looking for someone who meets these criteria:

  • Two to five years’ experience in daily news journalism
  • Able to meet the highest standards of accuracy, fairness and balance
  • Able to work effectively under deadline pressure
  • Working knowledge of media law

These qualities will be an advantage:

  • Sound understanding of local government processes
  • Existing local knowledge and contacts
  • Photography and/or videography skills
  • Can speak Te Reo Māori

This is a full-time role but job sharing will be considered for the right candidate/s. Assistance with relocation costs may be considered.

NZME will endeavour to retain the services of the reporter beyond the pilot project, subject to performance and circumstances such as their willingness to relocate should that be required.

Please apply below with your CV, cover letter and work samples.

Applications close: Monday 2nd September, 2019
