Frontend Developer - NZ Herald

We're looking for a Frontend Developer to join our Digital Development team working on the NZ Herald functionality and feature upgrades.

THE ROLE: 

In this role you will be responsible for digital innovation and front-end development across the NZ Herald functionality and feature upgrades. You will be responsible for the development of features for new and existing procedures and provide technical expertise and recommendations to your team members. You will work with a variety of stakeholders to support current platforms and manage issue resolution with third parties, assess new platforms, tools and integrations. 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist in building, testing and releasing robust, high performance applications that are suitable for current requirements and with flexibility for future changes. 
  • Review and influence ongoing design, standards and methods of our engineering process 
  • Research and be aware of other technologies, frameworks and hardware which could assist to achieve business goals. 
  • Manage the development process within the go-to-market and development frameworks (inceptions to completion). 
  • Ensure high quality through unit testing, standards and other quality measures. 
  • Create appropriate documentation to facilitate future enhancement and support of software code. 
  • Ensure the application is secure and resilient to the effects of high traffic and malicious users. 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • A relevant Engineering, Information Technology or Computer Science degree 
  • 3+ years web software development 
  • 3+ years React JS 
  • 3+ years JavaScript, HTML5 
  • 3+ years CSS - LESS/SASS/SCSS 
  • 2+ years Python/Django 
  • 2+ years SQL 
  • 2+ years Object Oriented Analysis & Design 
  • Methodical problem diagnosis 
  • Linux (basic knowledge) 
  • Good understanding of OWASP standards for secure application development 
  • You will be a team player who is solutions focused and loves a good challenge. 

Other Preferred Skills: 

  • Qualification in software development – specific to web or internet applications 
  • Self-taught software development skills or Software development accreditation 
  • 1+ years Agile/Scrum experience 
  • 1+ Docker experience 
  • 1+ years PHP 
  • 2+ years SVCS (Git, Subversion, …) 
  • SOA/ Microservices 
  • Jira
